Seven people, including two 8-year-old children, were injured Sunday in a three-vehicle wreck in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. in the 4300 block of South Western Avenue, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
A 2003 Dodge Caravan made an improper left turn and struck a 1994 Chrysler LHS traveling north on Western, said Chicago Police Officer John Mirabelli, a department spokesman. The Chrysler then struck a 1997 Ford Windstar that was stopped at a red light on 43rd Street, he said.
Seven people, five adults and two children, were hospitalized, the fire department reported.
An 11-year-old boy in the Chrysler LHS was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with a laceration to the forehead, said Mirabelli, but the fire department said the boy was 8 years old.
The driver of the Dodge Caravan, a woman in her 20s, was taken with non-life-threatening injuries to Holy Cross, Mirabelli said.
Five other passengers in the Chrysler Caravan were initially hospitalized in serious condition but police later said they suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A male driver and his female passenger, both in his 60s, refused medical treatment, Mirabelli said.
Citations are pending against the drivers of the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler LHS, Mirabelli said. The driver of the Chrysler LHS is the mother of the 11-year-old boy.
