A Downers Grove man was charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his mother in a Burr Ridge church parking lot.
Michael Zaky Bassaly, 27, is accused of gunning down his mother, Yvonne Zaky Bassaly, early Thursday, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
The 61-year-old woman was found fatally wounded — the victim of a single gunshot — about 1 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church of Chicago, according to village Mayor Mickey Straub.
Hours before the charges were announced in the case, Burr Ridge Police Deputy Chief Marc Loftus said a suspect in the case had called 911 to report the shooting.
Yvonne Zaky Bassaly was found in a silver Cadillac in the church lot, he said. She was pronounced dead at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital about 1:45 a.m., Loftus said.
Michael Zaky Bassaly is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at 8 a.m. Friday at the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
Samuel T. Samuel, pastor of the church, said neither the victim nor suspect was connected to the church.
Rebecca Michaels, attorney for the church and a member of the parish, said the gates to the church’s parking lot are always open.
“We are a Christian Church,” she said.
Built in 1980, the church draws about 800 members from communities as far as 30 miles away.
