A 17-year-old boy apparently drowned while swimming laps with two friends Wednesday night in southwest suburban Bolingbrook, police said.
Javier Vera, 17, of Bolingbrook. and his friends started swimming laps about 7:30 p.m. across a water-filled section of the quarry at 1421 W. 135th St., Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa said.
Vera started to struggle, went under and did not return to the surface, Rompa said. His friends, both 17, tried to help him but were not successful.
A dive team from Plainfield found the boy after 9 p.m., and he was pronounced dead, Rompa said.
