A police officer was injured after he was hit in the head with a baseball bat while trying to break up a fight early Saturday in West Englewood.

The officer was struck in the head while responding to a battery in progress about 12:40 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Winchester, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Paramedics took the officer to Stroger Hospital in serious condition early Saturday, but his condition has since been stabilized, officials said.

The officer was injured while trying to break up a fight in the street, a police source said.

One of several males involved in the fight hit the officer in the head with a baseball bat after the officer got out of his car, police said.

No one is in custody as Area South detectives investigate.
