Chicago Police officers dove into Lake Michigan near Belmont Harbor Wednesday morning to rescue a man who jumped into the lake after threatening to kill himself.
About 6:15 a.m. the police Marine Unit received a call that the 23-year-old man jumped in the lake and was threatening suicide, said police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
After they spotted the man, two officers dove into the water from the police boat, swam to him and prevented him from going under, police said. They then guided him to the boat where the officers on deck pulled the man to safety.
The 23-year-old North Side man was escorted to shore, where he was transported to Joseph Hospital for a health and mental evaluation, police said.
