Police and volunteers searched a wooded area near Glen Ellyn on Thursday but turned up no clues to the unsolved 2007 disappearance of John Spira.

Another search for the missing St. Charles man — who was 45 when he vanished under what DuPage County sheriff’s police said were “suspicious circumstances” — is planned for this weekend at the Belleau Wood Forest Preserve near Wheaton.

Spira was last seen on Feb. 23, 2007, at his Universal Cable Construction business near West Chicago.

Initial searches found no trace of Spira, a co-owner of the business, which was destroyed in a fire about six months after he disappeared.

Spira’s sister, Stephanie McNeil, was one of several volunteers who walked trails Thursday with sheriff’s detectives and poked through brush near the Great Western Trail on the edge of west suburban Glen Ellyn.

She thinks her brother is dead, but she still holds out hope of finding his remains — and his killer.

“He was one of my favorite people,” said McNeil, 50. “To have him ripped away from me makes my blood boil. No one had the right to take his life away.”
