A Chicago man who won $1 million from a scratch-off lottery ticket says he plans to use the winnings to invest in college funds for his young sons.
Edgardo Torres bought the Cash Spectacular instant ticket from Smokey Bear’s in the 8700 block of South Kedzie while redeeming another instant ticket that won him $10, according to the Illinois Lottery.
His sons, ages 8 and 14, started jumping up and down after he realized he’d won and told them the good news, Torres told lottery officials.
“Seeing them so happy made me smile. I suddenly realized that taking care of their education will be easier now,” Torres said in a statement, adding he plans to use the money to invest in college funds.
He said he also plans to buy a new home and take the boys to visit family in his native Puerto Rico.
The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
