Allegiant Air flew its last flight of Gary-Chicago International Airport on Saturday, leaving the northwest Indiana airport that tried to sell itself as Chicago’s third airport without regularly scheduled passenger service.
In ending the service, Allegiant, based in Las Vegas, cited a lack of “strong demand” for the Gary-to-Orlando-Sanford International Airport flights, which it had begun flying in February 2012.
Allegiant is the latest in a line of six airlines since 1999 that have tried offering service out of Gary but ultimately pulled out. One lasted only three weeks.
