A convicted bank robber was caught red-handed in a bank heist in the western suburbs after a dye pack hidden in a bag of stolen cash exploded — staining his hands and shirt with red dye, according to the FBI.

Valeriy V. Kouznetsov, 29, was charged Wednesday in federal court with the Monday morning robbery of Charter One Bank in the 6200 block of West Cermak in Berwyn. He’s suspected of holding up the same bank earlier this year, authorities said.

Just after 9 a.m. Monday, Kouznetsov walked into the bank and told a teller: “I have a gun. Give me everything, everything,” according to a federal criminal complaint. He stole more than $3,500 in cash, the FBI said.

Authorities believe he robbed the same teller June 27, allegedly saying: “I need money. I have a gun. I want it all.” In that holdup, the robber fled with more than $2,000.

Police captured Kouznetsov in Berwyn about seven minutes after Monday’s robbery. Kouznetsov had a fresh burn on his stomach, according to the FBI. Dye packs can cause burns when they explode.

Kouznetsov previously pleaded guilty to robbery and carjacking in a 2007 bank holdup in Maryland, records show. He was carrying a Maryland driver’s license when he was busted Monday.
