Just in time for 2013-2014 NFL preseason, Chicago football legend Mike Ditka is introducing a new type of game day meal: the Ditka Sausage.

Vienna Beef approached the former Bears coach and player to team up for the eight-inch sausages, which weigh in at a third of a pound each.

“Hot dogs are hot dogs. If you put the right things on them, they’re going to be good,” he said. “Is it better than any other one I’ve had? I don’t know, but it’s pretty damn good.”

The sausages will come in two varieties: hot Polish and chicken with tomato and mozzarella, according to the Vienna Beef website. “Served in Mr. Mike Ditka’s fine restaurants and taste-approved by the big guy himself,” the site boasts.

Vienna Beef head of business development Tom McGlade said the new sausages had a trial period at Ditka’s Restaurant in Chicago earlier this year, and both the beef and chicken sausages did equally well.

The new sausages will be available in stores in packs of two for $4.99-$5.99 or five-pound cases for $49.95.

A new Ditka Dog with beef sausage will also be available at Soldier Field by next Thursday, McGlade said.

“We’d been toying with it for a while,” said McGlade. “ We thought polish sausages, Mike Ditka — this is a perfect combination.”
