4-year-old on bike hit by truck, dies near Arlington Heights

A 4-year-old boy was killed when he accidentally rode his bike into traffic Monday afternoon in an unincorporated area near northwest suburban Arlington Heights.

He was riding his bike down a driveway in the 2300 block of West Oakton Road when he veered into the path of a semi-trailer truck about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Cook County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Benjamin Breit said.

“The driver immediately got out and tried to help and do what he could but by then it was too late,” Breit said, calling the boy’s death a “tragic accident.”

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Authorities were not releasing his name Monday evening, pending notification of relatives.

The driver was not cited or charged in connection with the crash, Breit said.
