Movement on Congress Theater promised by October

The Congress Theater will either have a new owner or be open by October, according to the theater’s attorney.

Demetris Kare appeared before Cook County Judge James McGing on Thursday, telling the judge negotiations on a new lease for the Congress Theater are pending, and requested an October status date in which a motion will be filed to notify the city of a transfer of the lease, should the deal go through.

Kare said the “viability” of the theater is playing a role in the delay of a new lease.

“Obviously part of the negotiation is the viability of the theater and the violations that are out there right now. So that is really the negotiation,” Kare said. “It’s a factor that both sides have to consider.”

Kare said the theater will be inspected once again by the city a week before its next hearing on Oct. 31.

Theater owner Eddie Carranza was not in court on Thursday.
