Foul smell brings fire, police response to West Loop

Updated: July 16, 2013 2:23PM

A foul smell around Wacker Drive and the Chicago River that brought fire and police crews to check for a source Tuesday morning may have been caused by a leaky garbage truck.

A HazMat response was called by the Chicago Fire Department in the 100 block of North Wacker Drive about 11 a.m. after a foul odor was reported coming from the area, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Fire and police crews worked for a couple hours to try to identify the source of the odor, but by about 1:20 p.m., Fire Media Affairs reported the source of the smell could not be found and the HazMat response was secured.

It was believed the odor could have been caused by a garbage truck that was leaking while traveling on Lower Wacker, Fire Media said.

No injuries were reported.
