While the threat of severe weather has diminished Tuesday afternoon, there continues to be the potential for thunderstorms that threaten heavy rainfall and gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to spread across northern Illinois Tuesday afternoon and night. The storms, fueled by warm and humid air, also carry the possibility of lightning, brief periods of gusty winds and heavy downpours.
There will be a lingering chance of thunderstorms Wednesday morning, especially south of Interstate 80. Those storms could produce heavy rainfall.
Storms could return to the area later toward the weekend and into next week, according to the service.
