Holding his two index fingers about a foot apart, one might have thought he was describing a good-sized fish pulled from Lake Michigan over the weekend.
But the Lawndale resident who asked not to be named was describing the size of the gun wielded by a man who rose through the moonroof of a slowly rolling minivan and sprayed bullets at a group of people hanging out on the corner of Flournoy and Francisco about 6 p.m. Saturday.
“It looked like a machine gun, maybe a TEC-9. I ducked for cover,” said the man, who was not injured.
Eight people were shot, including a 49-year-old man who died a short time later from bullet wounds to the chest and lower body. He was identified as Terry Patterson, of the 2800 block of West Flournoy.
Patterson was among 10 killed and 55 wounded during the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Police were waiting for lab results on bullet casings before confirming the type of weapon used.
On Sunday, a sign with a cross on it hung from a post commemorating Patterson at the scene of the shooting.
“His nickname was P-Stone,” said the man, who asked to remain anonymous. “He never did nothing to nobody. All he did was walk around and sell loose cigarettes for 50 cents.”
He said some of the wounded were hanging out on the corner, others were sitting on the front stoop of a nearby home.
“These were all normal people hanging around talking,” he said. “No one was in a gang.”
But police said the gunman may have been targeting a known gang member.
Other victims included a 72-year-old woman who was shot in the ankle; a 42-year-old woman shot twice in the right thigh; a 20-year-old woman shot in the right leg; a 43-year-old man shot in the back and leg; a 45-year-old man shot in the groin; a 48-year-old man shot in the leg, and a 31-year-old man shot in the wrist, police said.
The shooting occurred less than a block from where a 21-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon. A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest on Saturday evening near the same spot.
A law-enforcement source explained that the brother of a gang leader was recently shot in the area, and that might have sparked the gun violence.
On Sunday afternoon, police cars drove by the litter-strewn corner of Flournoy and Francisco every few minutes.
“In a few days, the police will stop coming around again, and the shooting will start again,” the Lawndale resident said.
A nearby mother who didn’t want to be named said she doesn’t let her kids out of the house at night.
“Now I’m going to keep them inside during the day, too,” she said.
