The Mell machine is whirring!

Sneed hears the resignation Wednesday of Ald. Dick Mell (33rd), 75, a longtime City Council stalwart, ensures the ascension to his throne of his gay activist daughter, state Rep. Deb Mell (D-Chicago).

But the soup gets thicker!

A top source tells Sneed plans are afoot for Mell’s former top lieutenant, Jaime Andrade, a City Council assistant sergeant-at-arms, to be enlisted by the Mell machine to run for Deb Mell’s house seat if she is appointed to replace her legendary dad.

◆ The Mell plot: “Although Mayor Emanuel has asked Ald. Mell to submit names for possible aldermanic replacements, Mell would not have resigned at this time if his daughter’s mayoral appointment wasn’t insured,” a top source said.

◆ The Mell shot: Sneed is told Mell, who is reportedly suffering from burnout after a 38-year term, had considered retiring earlier but was reportedly asked by hizzoner to hang on for awhile longer. Most recently, Mell has been telling friends he needs to spend more time with his grandkids.

“Two of Mell’s granddaughters are children of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is serving a 14-year term in a [Colorado] federal prison on corruption charges,” said a source.

“They are having a rough time dealing with the imprisonment of their father, whom they adore — and who is imprisoned so far away,” the source added.

“Mell is helping them out financially, but feels they need his help emotionally since Blagojevich’s imprisonment in 2012.” Blagojevich is married to Mell’s eldest daughter, Patti.
