A Hyde Park High School basketball player was shot dead Friday morning when a gun accidentally discharged inside a South Shore home, authorities said.

The 16-year-old boy was shot at least one time inside a home in the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue about 9:45 a.m., police said.

The boy was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which declined to release his name.

Hyde Park basketball coach Antoine Samuels identified the boy as Malcolm Whitney, a guard on the team.

“He played with us just yesterday at UIC,” Samuels said. “He was a model student athlete, any coach would be happy to have him. He had a 3.8 GPA.”

The medical examiner’s office said the boy suffered an apparent accidental gunshot wound.

“He was shot and died this morning,” Samuels said. “He was my team to be honest with you,” Samuels said. “He was playing so well. He was invited to the USC camp. He was coming.”

Area South detectives are conducting an on-going death investigation and are questioning a “person of interest.” An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
