The body of a man found in the waters off the 39th Street beach Wednesday morning has been identified as a University of Chicago student missing since last week.
Austin Hudson-LaPore, a 20-year-old biochemistry student at U. of C., was identified by his family early Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesman for the medical examiner’s office. A fisherman spotted his body about 6:25 a.m. in Lake Michigan near the 3900 block of South Lake Shore Drive.
Hudson-LaPore went missing after going for a walk sometime between 8:30 and 10 p.m. June 12, a stormy evening.
“We think that because of Austin’s fascination with the weather that he set out to walk along the lake, perhaps to Promontory Point to watch the storm,” his father Greg LaPore told reporters at the University of Chicago on Friday.
Police had searched the waters off Promontory Point, near 55th Street, on Tuesday.
“Austin was a bright, promising student who was active on campus, had a great love for the outdoors and was very engaged in the Shorey House community,” Karen Warren Coleman, U. of C. vice president for campus life and student services, said in a statement Wednesday. Hudson-LaPore’s family planned a news conference at the university Thursday morning.
