A man being held in the Cook County Jail on charges of murdering his son in 2012 hanged himself Sunday night while his cellmate watched the NBA Finals.
Correctional officers found Enoch Hayslett unresponsive in his maximum-security division cell about 8:20 p.m. Sunday and attempted to resuscitate him, Cook County Sheriff’s office spokesman Ben Breit said.
Hayslett, 27, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:11 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. An autopsy confirmed Hayslett died from hanging and ruled the death a suicide.
Hayslett was accused of murdering his young son at their home in the 19900 block of Park Avenue in Lynwood in December 2012. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Markham, authorities said.
He had pleaded not guilty to murder, aggravated battery to a child and attempted murder, according to court records. He was being held on a $3 million bond.
Hayslett’s cellmate was watching the NBA Finals game between Miami and San Antonio with other inmates when the suicide occurred, Breit said.
