Health officials in DuPage County are investigating a possible connection between four confirmed cases of E. coli infection.
Jason Gerwig of the DuPage County Health Department says investigators are trying to determine whether the patients all ate at the same restaurant.
Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove treated four patients with the potentially deadly bacteria in the past week.
The bacteria — which can cause diarrhea and stomach cramps — can be transmitted through contaminated water or food or through contact with animals or people. Good hand-washing habits and cooking meat thoroughly can prevent the spread of the bacteria.
