Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle officially launched her re-election bid Tuesday.
If she’s re-elected, she will focus on public safety and health care, Preckwinkle, 66, said Tuesday night at a a fund-raising event at the Chicago Cultural Center.
“We’re working towards the sustainability of our health-care system, and we still have some critical challenges to address in public safety, in particular in reducing the number of nonviolent offenders who are pretrial detainees in our jail,” Preckwinkle said.
When asked if a Chicago mayoral bid is in her future, the Hyde Park Democrat said, “I’m running for re-election for the job I’ve got.”
Preckwinkle, who has no significant challengers, reported a campaign warchest of nearly $549,000 at the end of March. Tuesday’s campaign event was expected to pull in $500,000.
