Several people were injured late Sunday after a motorist involved in a fender bender tried to flee the scene but crashed into a van just blocks away, authorities said.
The chain of events was put in motion when a 30-year-old man driving a Nissan Maxima rear-ended a Volvo about 11:05 p.m. Sunday in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, according to the police Office of News Affairs.
When officers on the scene in the 6700 block of South Indiana approached the Maxima to get the driver’s info, he sped off, traveling west, police said.
He made it only about four blocks before he crashed into a northbound van full of people in the 6700 block of South State, police said.
Three people were taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital and three people were taken in fair-to-serious condition to Saint Bernard Hospital, Chicago Fire Department officials said.
The fleeing driver was among those injured and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
Charges against the man were pending.
