A 9-year-old boy was in critical condition after being shot in the chest Wednesday evening on the South Side.

The boy was being treated at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.

A man who said he is the child’s uncle said the boy was doing better about 8 p.m. As the boy’s mother left the hospital later, she responded to reporters’ questions about his condition by saying, “He’s fine.” She would not give her name.

The boy was shot in the chest about 5:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Evans, Chicago Police said. He was one of at least six people wounded in shootings on the South Side on Wednesday afternoon and evening.

A fire department spokesman said paramedics did not take the boy to the hospital. Authorities said the boy’s parents may have driven him there for treatment.

Area Central detectives were investigating.
