Firefighters found a pot-growing operation in a house on fire Monday morning in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the South Side.
They responded to the fire at 8:45 a.m. Monday in the 9700 block of South Eggleston, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.
A resident told firefighters there was smoke coming from the attic of the 2½-story residential building. The small electrical fire in the attic, where the plants were being grown, was extinguished within minutes, Langford said.
Police officers recovered more than 100 cannabis plants and over 50,000 grams of cannabis, with a street value of more than $300,000, according to a release from Chicago Police News Affairs.
Jermaine Jones, 36, was charged with possesion of cannabis and producing cannabis, both felonies, police said.
No one was injured in the blaze, Langford said.
Authorities said the fire may have been caused by numerous electrical cords being used for lights in the attic.
