A convicted felon was ordered held without bail Saturday, accused of shooting and wounding a 10-year-old boy playing football in his front yard in Austin earlier this week.

“Do you think this is a joke?” Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesel asked 31-year-old Darris Moore before ordering him held without bail.

Police said the boy was playing near his home in the 900 block of North Waller Avenue on Wednesday when a fight broke out between two nearby groups of men.

Moore came running north on Waller, firing shots at one of the groups involved in the fight, police said.

One of the bullets struck the boy, who wasn’t the intended target, police said.

The boy’s aunt was parked in a car on the street and witnessed the shooting, according to prosecutors. She told police she heard a gunshot, then saw Moore chase down a man. Moore knocked the man to the ground, then stood over him and tried to shoot him, but his gun jammed, prosecutors said.

A second witness saw Moore running with the gun and helped police find him as he ran on Chicago Avenue, authorities said.

A 9mm live round and a shell casing were found at the scene. A police camera caught Moore in the area 15 minutes before the shooting, authorities said.

Moore was on probation for a 2008 armed robbery and has seven felony convictions.

Moore, of the 800 block of North Waller Avenue, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm.
