An 18-year-old man was charged with stealing a cell phone after the alleged victim and witnesses chased him Monday in Evanston, officials said.
Francisco Gonzalez, of 1200 block of Harvard Terrace in Evanston, was charged with felony theft from a person.
Gonzalez is accused of grabbing the cell phone at 7 p.m. from a 53-year-old Evanston man who was using the phone in the 300 block of Dodge Avenue, according to police.
The victim and several witnesses gave chase and called police, who found the suspect hiding in a yard in the 1800 block of Kirk Street, police said.
Police said “several incidents similar have occurred over the past several weeks” but so far, Gonzalez had not been linked to other robberies.
