Man charged with DUI after drunken crash kills woman

A west suburban man is in custody after he drunkenly crashed an SUV near Wheaton, killing an 18-year-old woman who was his passenger, authorities said.

Karlos Leath, 31, of Warrenville, was driving southboound on Shaffner Road when he left the roadway and rolled the 2003 Ford Explorer over near Mack Road about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s office.

The 18-year-old woman was taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries, the sheriff’s office said. Her name was not released, pending the notification of her family.

Leath was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI in an accident causing death, according to the DuPage Sheriff’s website.

The crash prompted officials to shut down Shaffner Road for about five hours, according to the release.
