Man found dead in Evanston house fire was city retired employee: officials

A house fire in Evanston claimed the life of a retired city employee on Wednesday afternoon, according to city officials in the Northern suburb.

Fred Davis, a retired city of Evanston employee, was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital, according to fire department and city officials.

About 5 p.m., Evanston firefighters were summoned to a residence in the 1900 block of Harney Avenue, City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said in an email.

At about 5:45 p.m., Bobkiewicz reported that the fire was under control and that a single victim had been transported to a hospital in critical condition. At 6:15 p.m., Bobkiewicz sent another email simply stating, “Injured man died at hospital.”

According to neighbors, Davis lived alone and suffered from diabetes.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has been notified of the fatality as of Wednesday evening, but could provide not immediately provide further details.
