As if we really needed official confirmation, this is now the wettest April on record in Chicago, according to the National Weather Service.
The .70 inches of rain that fell at O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday brought the monthly total to 8.54 inches, a new monthly rainfall record, the weather service said.
The Top 5 wettest Aprils on record in Chicago are:
1. 2013 -- 8.54 inches
2. 1947 -- 8.33 inches
3. 1975 -- 7.84 inches
4. 1909 -- 7.73 inches
5. 1983 -- 7.69 inches
As of Wednesday morning, a flood warning remained in effect for rivers throughout Illinois and northwest Indiana.
The following area rivers are affected by the flood warning:
Des Plaines River in Lake and Cook counties;
Fox River in Kane, McHenry, Kendall and LaSalle counties;
Kankakee River in Porter, Lake and Newton counties in Indiana;
Rock River in Winnebago County; and
Iroquois River in Iroquois County.
Owners of property that sustained substanial damage from last week’s heavy rains and flooding can request a lower tax assessment after Gov. Pat Quinn declared a large swath of the state a disaster area.
Quinn’s declaration of major disaster area status for 38 counties triggered the disaster area reassessment provisions of the Illinois Property Tax Code.
The disaster area ranged throughout Northeastern Illinois and south of Champaign County. It included Cook, Lake, Kane, Kendall, DuPage, DeKalb, Grundy, McHenry and Will counties, officials said.
