An 86-year-old Highland Park man was arrested and charged with unlawful practice of dentistry April 16.
Sheldon Hamilton, of the 2000 block of Linden Avenue, had practiced dentistry out of an office at 1866 Sheridan Road.
During a recent fire inspection at the building, Fire Inspector Charlie Orth found numerous code violations and suspected Hamilton may be practicing without a license.
Hamilton was served an arrest warrant, alleging unlawful practice of dentistry, at his residence April 16. He posted a cash bond and is due to appear May 13 in Lake County Circuit Court.
Documents provided by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation showed that Hamilton relinquished his license after signing a consent order March 31, 2008. The action was brought after Hamilton was found to be practicing in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. He also was required to surrender his license to prescribe controlled substances.
His license was previously suspended in 1995 and again in 2005 related to an unpaid Illinois income tax liability for the 1993 tax year, according to the department. He paid the $1,600 owed in December of 2005.
Hamilton could not be reached for comment.
