Updated: April 22, 2013 10:51AM

A man was killed on the Southwest Side late Sunday when the pickup he was driving collided with a semi truck, police said.

The victim was driving a Chevrolet pickup in the 4400 block of South Archer Avenue about 10:40 p.m. when he drove through a red light, colliding with an 18-wheel semi, authorities said.

The pickup hit the side of the semi, which went over the hood of the pickup, causing the wheels of the semi to come to a rest on top of the pickup, authorities said.

Alexander Ruiz, 28, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital about 30 minutes after the crash, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Ruiz, of the 5900 block of South Keeler Avenue, was the only person injured, the medical examiner’s office said.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash, according to a source.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating.
