Student charged with bringing shotgun to Elgin alternative high school

A 15-year-old Elgin alternative high school student has been charged with three felony weapons violations after an unloaded shotgun was found in his locker Thursday.
Police received a tip about 11:30 a.m. that a student brought a weapon to Gifford Street High School, 53 S. Gifford St., according to Elgin police.
Police worked with school authorities to secure students and search the campus, police said. An unloaded shotgun was found inside a student’s locker.
A 15-year-old student from Streamwood was taken into custody, police said. He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a gang member, unlawful use of a weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, and unlawful use of a weapon, all Class 3 felonies, according to police.
The teen has been detained at the Kane County Youth Home pending a detention hearing, police said.
No ammunition was found, according to police.
Gifford Street High School is an alternative school with students from five other district high schools, according to the school’s website.
