HAMPSHIRE — Illinois State Police are investigating two crashes that injured seven people and temporarily halted westbound traffic on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway near Hampshire.
The crashes, both involving semi trucks, happened on Interstate 90 shortly after 11:30 a.m. between Harmony Road and the Marengo Toll Plaza.
Hampshire Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Trevor Hermann said the first crash involved three semi trucks and a utility truck. He said one person was trapped in the wreckage of one of the semis for 48 minutes before being extricated and taken to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. His or her condition was not available.
Three other people were treated for injuries at the scene, Herrmann said.
The other crash happened minutes later three-quarters of a mile to the east as traffic backed up from the first crash, and it involved a semi and two cars. Two people were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries while a third was treated at the scene, Herrmann said.
Both crashes happened in construction zones as workers expand I-90 in that area from four lanes to six lanes.
Hampshire ambulance crews were assisted by ambulances from the Burlington, Pingree Grove and Boone County fire districts.
