Canal Street reopened after man threatening to jump off overpass persuaded to climb down

Updated: April 5, 2013 11:02AM

A tense situation was diffused early Friday after police persuaded a man who was threatening to jump from a South Loop train overpass to come down.

Just after midnight Friday, the man climbed down from his perch on an overpass fence that overlooked train tracks near the Metra rail yard, police said.

Earlier, at about 10:40 p.m. Thursday, police closed a stretch of South Canal Street between the 1400 and 1500 blocks as they worked to sooth the man, police said.

The street was reopened by 12:20 a.m. Friday.
