City to raise Chicago River bridges Saturday as boats head to docks

A rite of spring hits Saturday when the city kicks off Chicago’s boating season with the lifting of 27 bridges.
Bridges will rise sequentially every eight to 12 minutes, from Ashland Avenue on the South Branch of the Chicago River to Lake Shore Drive, to allow recreational boats to access their docks and moorings. The ritual begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and continues most Saturday and Wednesday mornings through Saturday, June 29.
In a new twist this year, no bridges will be lifted from April 26 through May 5 because of work on the Wells Street Bridge during that period.
