Investigators were working to determine if a 51-year-old Bolingbrook man was riding or walking a bicycle when he was fatally struck by a car in North Riverside early Wednesday.
About 3:35 a.m., police responded to several calls of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 2300 block of Harlem Avenue, a release from North Riverside police said. Officers found the victim lying in the roadway south of 23rd Street.
The 28-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck the man remained on the scene and was cooperating with police.
The victim, Anthony J. Catalano of Bolingbrook, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
An accident reconstruction specialist from the Illinois State Police was called to the scene. The southbound lanes of Harlem Avenue between Cermak Road and 24th Street was closed for about 3 1/2 hours to allow investigators to process the scene and collect evidence.
Police said a bicycle was found at the accident scene, but it was unclear if Catalano was riding or walking the bicycle at the time of the accident.
The driver of the vehicle submitted to breath and chemical tests, and was “cooperative,” police said.
The accident remained under investigation and no charges or citations had been filed as of late Wednesday morning.
