Mokena man accused of ‘April Fools’ crime

Updated: May 3, 2013 6:37AM

A Mokena man was charged with groping a woman jogger Monday on a trail in New Lenox, yelling “April Fools’” before he fondled her, according to Will County Forest Preserve District police.

The woman was able to get the license plate of the man’s car from a parking lot for the Old Plank Road Trail and contacted police, who arrested Adrian C. Garcia about 15 minutes later, district police Lt. Tracy Phillips said.

Garcia, 26, was found at his residence, 19843 Schoolhouse Road, and was charged with aggravated battery and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, police said.

About 12:45 p.m., the victim was running near Schoolhouse and Constitution roads when she passed by a man in a white hoodie, turned around and started walking to cool down, Phillips said.

“He ran up behind her, grabbed her breast and yelled ‘April Fools,’” she said. “She started yelling at him and said she would call the police so he took off.”

She said that when the woman returned to her car, she saw a car parked next to it, wrote down its license plate number and called police.

The woman then drove a half-block away, where she waited until she saw Garcia get into the car and drive off, Phillips said.

She said Garcia’s description and outfit match that of a suspect in an almost identical incident on the same trail last April 17, and police were pursuing possible charges in that crime.

Garcia is also charged with drunken driving and aggravated battery in connection with a January 2012 incident in Frankfort, according to records. He’s scheduled to appear in court April 26 on those charges.
