Baby dropped into officer’s arms at Lyons apartment fire

Updated: April 1, 2013 9:20AM

Lyons police officers rescued residents from an apartment fire in west suburban Lyons early Monday, including a baby dropped from an upper floor into an officer’s arms.

Officer Rob Zieman caught the child after Officer Charles Wright noticed the fire at the apartment building in the 4500 block of Prescott while on patrol about 12:20 a.m., Lyons Police Chief Harley Schinker said.

Wright, a 30-year-veteran, entered the building and rescued several people from the building, Schinker said.

Wright was treated and released from MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn for smoke inhalation, Schinker said.

No one was injured but 15 people were displaced due to the fire, Schinker said.

The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago provided food and shelter to one family, a spokeswoman said.
