A man is in police custody after he crashed an SUV into the back of a minivan on South Lake Shore Drive late Sunday, sending one woman to the hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

Police said the 32-year-old man was driving the black SUV in the northbound lanes when he plowed into the back of the white minivan near 47th Street about 10:50 p.m.

The impact sent the mini-van careening over a curb.

A woman in her 30s who was in the van was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Though the SUV driver was in custody, charges had not been filed against him as of 4 a.m. Monday. It is unclear if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash, police said.

Three lanes of the roadway were closed to northbound traffic for several hours as the police Major Accidents Investigation unit investigated the crash.
