Derailed train in Gary carried hazardous material, officials say none leaked

Updated: March 30, 2013 6:55PM

Three derailed cars on a Canadian National Railway freight train in Gary carried hazardous materials, but authorities said none of the cars leaked.

The derailment happened about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, just northwest of Broadway, near the U.S. Steel entrance and north of the South Shore commuter rail line tracks.

CN spokesman Patrick Waldron said 35 of the 101-car freight train derailed for unknown reasons.

The track arches over Broadway on an overpass.

The derailment ruptured a 14-inch industrial gas line that serves the Great Lakes Industrial Center and temporarily halted service on the South Shore line, but

service resumed with a train that arrived in Chicago around 10:15 a.m. Waldron said the freight train was westbound, headed for CN’s Kirk Yard, and most of the cars were empty. No one was hurt.
