Cook County sheriff’s police Thursday caught a man who allegedly owed thousands of dollars in child support payments after he tried to crawl down basement stairs to avoid arrest.
Officers went to an address on the 900 block of South 5th Avenue in Maywood to execute a child support warrant for Steven Jones, 36, who allegedly owes $76,228 in past-due payments, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
When officers knocked on the door and spotted Jones through a window, Jones dropped to the floor and crawled down the stairs to the basement, the sheriff’s office said.
Officers knocked again multiple times and told Jones to come to the door, and they forced entry into the home when there was no response, the sheriff’s office said. During their investigation, officers learned that Jones was working there as a tax preparer.
Jones was arrested on the child support warrant when officers found him hiding in the basement, the sheriff’s office said. He was also charged with obstruction of service of process.
