A candidate for Villa Park president said Thursday he remains “steadfast in the race” even after acknowledging embarrassing photographs of him have surfaced on the Internet.

John Heidelmeier, a military veteran and former police chief of the western suburb, said it’s “meaningless” how the pictures became public.

“I did nothing unlawful or anything that diminishes my ability to serve the people of Villa Park,” Heidelmeier said.

Heidelmeier’s comments were made in a written statement delivered to the Chicago Sun-Times through a campaign email address. In it, Heidelmeier apologizes to his supporters, “but more importantly to my wife and family.”

“This is unquestionably not fair to them,” Heidelmeier said.

A pair of photographs, one of a man exposing himself, appear in the “blackmail pics” section of a website promising “Your Most Diverse Phone Sex Experience ... Because Anything Goes.”

Heidelmeier’s name appears above and below the photographs, and a link titled “Running for office” connects to the Facebook page for Heidelmeier’s campaign. That link appears to have been posted in the early morning hours of March 15.

“I want to assure my opponent and supporters that I will stay steadfast in the race,” Heidelmeier wrote in his statement, “and let the voters take a careful look at the real issues facing Villa Park.”

His opponent in the April 9 election couldn’t be reached for comment.
