Grand jury indicts Janay McFarlane’s accused killer

The North Chicago man alleged to have committed Lake County’s first homicide of 2013 was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday, March 27.
Jim McPherson, 21, was indicted on first-degree murder charges for allegedly shooting Janay McFarlane, 18, the night of Feb. 15. The teenager’s younger sister was in Chicago the same day her sister was shot listening to President Obama’s anti-violence speech.
McPherson is charged with first-degree murder, armed violence, unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. He will have the opportunity to plead not guilty to these charges at his arraignment April 2.
McFarlane and some friends walked to John’s Liquor Store and Mini Mart, 1000 14th St., North Chicago, the night of the shooting.
McPherson was inside the store and appeared to stare McFarlane and her friends down, authorities said.
The teen and her friends left the store and took an alley home.
McPherson is alleged to have shot McFarlane in the head. She died in the alley in the 1300 block of Jackson Street at the scene.
McPherson is being held at Lake County Jail in lieu of $3 million bond.
