Man charged with theft of $125K of diesel filters from semis

WOODSTOCK — A Milwaukee man is in jail awaiting extradition to Illinois for the alleged theft of more than $100,000 worth of filters from semi trucks at a northwest suburban auto dealership.
William J. Czarnecki, 42, was captured in the Milwaukee area this week by Woodstock police, with the help of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit.
Woodstock police received a report Oct. 8, 2012, that someone had stolen 26 diesel particulate filters from 26 new and used Ford trucks on the lot at Bull Valley Ford, 1460 S. Eastwood Drive, Woodstock. Each filter was valued at $4,790, for a total of about $125,000 in losses, police said.
Czarnecki was identified as a suspect and linked to the crime based on evidence processed at the Illinois State Police Crime Lab in Rockford, police said.
The McHenry County States Attorney’s office on March 14 approved one count of theft over $10,000 against Czarnecki, and an arrest warrant was issued, police said.
A diesel particulate filter is a device attached to a diesel vehicle’s exhaust system to remove particulate matter or soot from emissions.
