A former Chicago Public School employee was sentenced to four years probation Wednesday after she admitted she stole over $20,000 from a middle school.
Cook County Judge Maura Slattery Boyle also ordered Sonia Lopez to pay $25,544 in restitution after Lopez pleaded guilty to theft.
Lopez, now 50, wrote 14 fraudulent checks to herself totaling $21,000 while she worked as a teaching assistant and treasurer at Thurgood Marshall Middle School, 3900 N. Lawndale.
Prosecutors also said she swiped $3,000 in cash from student fees and other payments.
