A former Elmhurst youth minister allegedly carried on a years-long sexual relationship with a teenage church member that included encounters in cemeteries, parks and public restrooms.

Darin Evans, 41, is accused of beginning the relationship in 2004 when he was counseling the 16-year-old girl at West Suburban Community Church, where he worked as an associate pastor, DuPage County authorities said Tuesday.

Evans surrendered Monday to Elmhurst police to face charges of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal abuse.

During a court appearance Tuesday, he was ordered jailed on $300,000 bond.

Evans allegedly continued the relationship with the young woman until 2011 — and pressured her to keep quiet by claiming he would harm himself if she told anyone, prosecutors said.
