1 dead, 7 injured in weekend violence in Chicago

A man was beaten to death at a CTA station, and seven people were wounded in other violence in Chicago this weekend.

Police said the 37-year-old beating victim died from injuries suffered in a fight with another man on the platform of the 43rd Street CTA Green Line station on the South Side around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The man, whose identity has not been released, died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. No one has been arrested.

In the other incidents:

A sergeant with the Metra police department was stabbed in the leg when he tried to break up a fight Saturday night at Union Station, according to a spokesman for the commuter transit agency.

The fight broke out just before 7 p.m. near a McDonald’s restaurant on the upper level of the station, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.

When the sergeant intervened, one of those involved turned on him, stabbing him three times in the leg, Miller said.

The sergeant was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment.

“He seems to be doing OK,” Miller said.

The sergeant’s attacker was arrested at the station, Miller said. Charges against the attacker are pending further investigation by Amtrak police.

A 27-year-old man was shot during a robbery Saturday night in the 4700 block of South Rockwell Avenue in Back of the Yards but wasn’t badly hurt, police said.

In Austin around about 2:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the hand during a robbery in the 5000 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said. The man was in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital., police said.

A teenage boy was shot in the back around 7 p.m. Saturday in Gage Park. Police said the teen was in the 2400 block of West 58th Street when he was shot twice — once in the shoulder and once in the back.

A 15-year-old boy told officers he was in the 1600 block of West Pratt Boulevard when he was shot around 1:15 p.m. Saturday. The police said the teen went Evanston Hospital for treatment.

At 12:13 a.m. Saturday, a 45-year-old man was shot in a leg in the 900 block of North Kedvale Avenue in Humboldt Park, police said.

At 1:40 a.m. Saturday, a 25-year-old man was shot in the hip as he stood in a crowd in the 1300 block of West Randolph Street and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, police said.
