Two killed in South Side crash

November 15, 2009

Charges are pending Sunday morning against the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu who allegedly caused a four-car crash that killed two people Saturday on the South Side.

About 5:10 p.m., a Chevrolet Malibu traveling east on East 75th Street collided with an Oldsmobile Alero traveling north on South State Street after the driver of the Malibu attempted to make a right turn at the intersection, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

One or both of the cars struck an Infiniti and a Chevrolet Impala stopped at a light in the westbound lanes of East 75th Street, Mirabelli said.

Christopher Chapman, 27, of the 5900 block of South Throop Street, was pronounced dead at 5:54 p.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Chapman was the driver of the Oldsmobile and was initially hospitalized in “very critical” condition, authorities said. Nobody else was in the car.

The driver of the Malibu is believed to be at fault in the crash, according to police. A passenger in the Malibu, Ardella Wells, 87, of the 10500 block of South Racine Avenue, was also killed in the crash.

The driver was treated and released from Provident Hospital of Cook County, and police said there are charges pending against the person. It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Wells was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital at 8:20 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

The man driving the Infiniti and a female passenger refused medical treatment, as did the driver of the Impala, Mirabelli said.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
