Attack on cat costs man $1,600, year of probation

November 14, 2009

A former Algonquin man accused of beating his roommate's 7-month-old cat with a golf club has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.

After the plea last week, a McHenry County judge sentenced 30-year-old Donald Conrad to a year of probation, fined him $500 and ordered him to pay $1,127 in restitution to the cat's owner.

Conrad's attorney says his client did not beat the cat, but merely threw it out of the house.

The cat, named Boogy, survived the Oct. 25 attack, but suffered a broken jaw and lost an eye.

Boogy's owner, Dana Borzick, says it cost her $1,700 in veterinarian bills to save her pet.

Borzick says the attack happened while she and her fiance were sharing a residence with Conrad.
