Sauk Village ordered to continue temporary fix to ensure safe drinking water

A court order entered Wednesday requires south suburban Sauk Village to continue to use temporary air-stripping units to remove vinyl chloride from the public water supply. The temporary fix was implemented last July after high levels of vinyl chloride were detected in two wells.
In addition, the village is prohibited from resuming the use of well No. 3, which has been offline since 2009 due to the presence of vinyl chloride above the maximum level, a statement from the Attorney General’s office said.
Those steps must continue until the village installs a permanent treatment system, subject to the approval of the Illinois EPA.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan said in the statement that the consent order, entered Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court, ensures the village will continue to provide residents with safe, clean drinking water, and her office will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure the village complies.
The agreement also requires Sauk Village to continue testing water samples, complete a supplemental environmental project, and pay a $2,500 civil penalty.
